Course outline
Get on every GC's bid list
Registering on networks only reaches GCs that already use them. Build the longest list of general contractors you can, find the person at each who sends flooring invitations, and send them your prequalification packet with a plain request to be added. Then follow up with the ones that went quiet.
After this lesson you can
- Build a long list of GCs from search, bought lists, associations and public records
- Write the first-contact and reconnect emails
- Keep every GC current so you stay on their list
Build the longest list you can
Collect names in bulk first. You can sort out who's worth chasing later.
- Search. "General contractors" plus your city, then again for the work you want: school construction, medical office, retail, industrial, tenant improvement.
- Buy a list. Contractor lists are for sale by market and trade, and the plan room directories from step 2 can be searched the same way.
- Association member lists. AGC, ABC and your local builders exchange publish their members.
- Public records. Building permits, planning agendas and public bid tabulations all name the contractor.
- What you can see. Jobsite signs, project announcements in the local business press, and the contractors your suppliers and competitors mention.
Send the packet and ask
Every GC on the list gets the same packet from step 1. Only the opening of the email changes:
Two emails that get you on bid lists
SampleFrom Brightmark Flooring, the made-up sub from step 1. Same packet attached to both; only the opening changes.

Why it works
- One person, by name: the one who sends flooring invitations.
- Who you are in two lines: scopes, area, and the classification they may need.
- Proof they'll recognize: two recent jobs and the GCs you did them for.
- The packet attached, and an offer to fill in their own form.

Why it works
- Start with the job you did together. They already know your work.
- Say what you noticed without blaming anyone: no invitations since.
- Send the packet again, current, so their file isn't stale.
- End with a question that's easy to answer. A call often works better than another email.
- Find the estimating contactThe estimator or preconstruction coordinator who sends flooring invitations, not a general info@ address. It's usually on the company's team page, or in the footer of an invitation you've already had.
- Send the packet with the askOne email per GC, with the packet attached and a plain request to be added to their bid list for flooring.
- Follow up with the ones that went quietGCs that used to invite you and stopped are your best prospects: they already know your work. A call beats another email.
- Keep it currentPrequalifications and insurance certificates expire, and a lapsed one quietly takes you off the list. Send the update before they ask.
Key points
- Build the list in bulk, then work it.
- Every GC on it gets the packet before they ask for one.
- A GC that went quiet is your warmest lead.
Work the whole list without losing track of it
Bought a list or exported one? Import takes a spreadsheet and maps it into companies and contacts. Client research then fills the gaps from each company's own website (estimating contact, phone, address and their prequalification requirements), keeping an email only when the page it cites actually publishes it, and filling blanks rather than overwriting. Paste a project announcement or drop in a screenshot and IntelBid pulls out each company and its role, creates the ones you don't have and researches them too. Pre-Qual sorts every client by where you stand (on their list, went quiet, one-off, never invited) and tells you the next move. Pick the clients and IntelBid drafts one email each with your packet attached for you to review and send, then tracks what's sent, what's waiting and what's about to expire.
